The Story of Tahdeeb Ummi Store

Majda Hassan Taha Qarqodeh, from Jerash, founded her project Tahdeeb Ummi as an embodiment of love and memory. For her, the shemagh is not just fabric—it is a symbol of celebrations, the voices of grandmothers, and the memory of old homes. As Majda recalls: “It was not just fabric—it carried the scent of days past, the memory of holidays, and the voices of grandmothers weaving stories along its edges. In that moment, I felt the shemagh deserved more than just to be worn—it deserved to be told.”

Inspiration from Her Mother

Majda learned the art of hemming (tahdeeb) from her mother, who was her first teacher and inspiration, with every stitch carrying her presence and patience. From there, she went on to create a wide range of products, including hemmed shemaghs, scarves, hats, and arja pieces, in addition to accessories inspired by shemagh patterns such as rings, bracelets, keychains, and pins. She also designs home décor pieces with national symbols like the Dome of the Rock, the olive tree, and the Palestinian kufiya.

Products That Preserve Heritage

Majda uses natural cotton, silk, and wool threads—materials that reflect the authenticity of heritage and the values of simplicity. Every piece is made slowly and sincerely, becoming more than just a product but a story woven from the memory of Jordanian homes.

Ambition and Distinction

For Majda, her project is not just a craft but a way to preserve heritage from being forgotten, while also empowering her local community—especially women artisans. Her ambition is for her products to reach the world, becoming a new language of nostalgia and an emotional experience for everyone who owns a piece from Tahdeeb Ummi. What makes her work unique is that she does not create from nothing, but from deeply rooted traditions of the Jordanian home—where craft meets longing, art meets memory, and every product carries a soul that cannot be bought.

These products were supported through Khairat Al-Dar project.
Khairat Al-Dar is a digital platform launched by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship as a pilot initiative to empower home-based businesses in Jordan, providing them with an integrated environment to market their products in a modern and effective way.
