The Story of Hanan Al-Atish Store

From Salt, Hanan Al-Atish began her journey in 2000 in the city of Ma’an, working as a literacy teacher for women. Yet her passion for training and love for handicrafts added another dimension to her classes. She dedicated time to volunteering, teaching women traditional crafts, turning the classroom from a place for learning letters into a space for reviving heritage.

From Classroom to Workshop

Given the family responsibilities, age, and difficulty for her trainees to access markets, Hanan decided to personally handle the marketing of their products within her circle of acquaintances. Over time, the small classroom evolved into a modest workshop carrying the dreams of entire families.

Perseverance Despite Challenges

Today, after 25 years of continuous work, the classroom doors are still open, and Hanan remains dedicated as both a literacy teacher and volunteer. Despite earning a modest salary of no more than 90 dinars and lacking any retirement or social security system, her determination turned the dream into reality: Hanan Al-Atish Workshop, a place that unites education, empowerment, and handicrafts.

Products with Identity and Purpose

In her workshop, distinctive products are crafted—tables, macramé pieces, baskets made from straw and banana leaves, handbags, and recycled items from electrical wires. Each piece tells the story of a resilient women’s community striving for dignified income and authentic local products. Hanan’s ambition is to expand her workshop to support more women and families, spreading handicrafts as a means of economic and social empowerment. What truly sets her apart is that her project has never been just a business, but an ongoing mission to build a stronger community.

These products were supported through Khairat Al-Dar project.
